Science Adventure Lab Week

All 4th-6th grade classes have been selected to receive science workshops from the Science Adventure Lab, a partner of the Seattle Children's Hospital. On Tuesday October 25th and Thursday October 27th our 4th-6th grade students will participate in a 60 minute workshop titled "Seeking the Sugar Solution" (Chemistry and Nutrition).

The Science Adventure Lab's mission is to deliver innovative educational experiences that inspire new passions for science, promote better health for all students, and enhance science education throughout Washington state by working in partnership with teachers, schools and communities.

The Science Adventure Lab is a 45-foot-long mobile science lab custom-built in 2009 designed to deliver an exceptional learning experience. Curricula are focused on life science topics that promote health — such as nutrition, prevention of infectious disease and exploring respiratory functions — and expose students to the exciting world of cutting-edge science. Once aboard the mobile lab, students in grades 4-6 conduct hands-on, interactive science experiments that challenge them to solve authentic problems and introduce them to career possibilities in the health sciences.

Details:
-The bus will arrive and park behind or next to playshed after students have safely entered the building and will depart after students have gone home for the day.
-4th-6th grade students must have signed permission slips, have watched the safety video and participated in the provided practice experiment.
-For safety reason, teachers and students must wear long pants and closed toed shoes while on the bus.

Walk To School Day October 19th

On October 19th Wildwood will be hosting a Walk to School Day. This event is in participation with the annual iWalk International Walk to School Program, which is a part of National Center for Safe Routes to School. Staff, students and members of the community will be meeting at the Wildwood Park baseball fields at 8:10 AM and then walking to Wildwood at 8:20 AM. I'm really looking forward to participating in Wildwood's "Walk to School Day," please join us at the Wildwood Park baseball fields to walk to school with your students on the morning of Wednesday October 19th.

2011 ~ Teacher Bus Parade

The Teacher Bus Parade will be much different this year and will focus entirely on our poverty study. On the October 5th Principal Day, we will be touring the new facilities at St. Francis House followed by a tour of the new facilities at the Puyallup Food Bank. The trip itinerary is listed below and with travel will most likely exceed the 90 minute restriction in the contract by about 15 minutes. If that is unacceptable for some, staff may use their own car to drive themselves, claim mileage, leave at the appropriate time and return to school to finish their work day.

In the spirit of the event we'll also do a staff peanut butter and tuna fish food drive to be delivered when we arrive. Vicki Egeland will coordinate this event, more info from her soon.

This field trip replaces our annual neighborhood bus parade for this year.

Both agencies have never had an entire school staff tour their facilities before and they are extremely excited.

Nature Trail Improvements!

This Saturday, Sept 17th - The Northwest Day of Service. This will start at 10 and run through the morning and possibly into the afternoon. We will be:

pouring a slab of concrete for the "stage" of the amphitheater (where an instructor could stand to teach)
installing a podium on that teaching stage for instruction
installing 7 concrete benches for seating in the amphitheater. Each bench will be stamped with a constellation from the night sky
painting and sealing previous concrete installations along the path
general trail clean up, re-gravel, and possibly planting native plants, such as rhododendrons, in places along the path.
installing posts to number the learning stations along the path
installing signs at either entrance to the path.

All in the community are welcome to help participate. For those who are unable to do hard labor, there will be a group of people doing some kind of humanitarian aid project on the grounds (perhaps on the covered basketball courts). For those who wish to help but are unable to be present, donations toward materials would be helpful. We have no budget for this, so all materials must be donated. Questions can be sent to me:

Eleven Days is a spoken word meditation on Dr. King and his relationship with bold, organized communities, and homage to the collective courage that led to sweeping changes in our nation.

“If you could save up eleven of your days which ones would you keep?” What were the most important days in Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and how did those days change our nation forever? Eleven Days is a celebration in theater, original poetry, music and dance that tells Dr. King’s story in eleven parts and includes major events from his life including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Dr. King’s speech at the Lincoln Memorial and more personal events including his loving upbringing.

Please be patient with each of the filters, they take a while to load. You can also use the filters to compare results by County and by School District. Students have until Friday to make their voices heard!

Students have until 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 29 to vote in the statewide Mock Election. Kids may cast their online ballots at www.sos.wa.gov/elections/mock.

Here’s what teachers should know before students vote:

3) How It Works (video, 45 sec)

Secretary of State Sam Reed will give special recognition to schools with the highest student voter turnout. Last year, Dayton Middle School had a huge 91 percent turnout, and an impressive 77 percent of Serene Lake Elementary students voted in Edmonds. Which school will have the highest turnout this year is anyone’s guess.

“It’s important everyone votes,” says Reed. “One vote can be the deciding voice in an election.”

For example, Reed recalls a tied race for Fire Commissioner. “According to state law, tied elections are decided by a coin toss. So I invited everyone to watch; the press, the candidates, and the candidates’ families. I threw the coin into the air, and the candidates called heads or tails. Of course the candidate who lost was disappointed. He turned to his mother-in-law and said, ‘If you had voted, I would have won!’ She replied, ‘What makes you think I would have voted for you?’ Remember, every vote counts.”

October 25th-Online Voting for the Mock Election opens at 9 AM

October 29th-Online voting for the Mock Election closes at 1 PM

November 2nd-General Election voting ends at 8 PM (results are posted in 30 minutes)

Students can vote in the Mock Election at www.vote.wa.gov, participation is fast, easy and free, no preregistration is necessary.

Please distribute "I Voted" stickers to your students on Friday morning and ask them to wear them.

Elementary Math Training

Elementary Math Training for grades 3, 4, and 5 teachers.

Participation is highly recommended and participants will be paid for their time and receive clock hours.

In an effort to address math alignment issues of our current math curriculum at grades 3-5 with Washington State Math Standards, we invite all teachers in those grades to a training at Ballou Junior High on Wednesday, Sept 29 from 2:00-5:00 pm. New Self Guided Nature Trail!

A Team Effort between the LDS Church, Wildwood PTA, & the Master Gardeners completed an interpretive self guided nature trail out in the back woods beside the portables. Please thank Rachel Pease for her leadership on this project! It turned out beautiful! Official Ribbon Cutting soon!

Greetings Wildwood!

I am so pleased to have the opportunity to serve as the Assistant Principal at Wildwood Elementary.

I've spent the last few days getting acclimated, moving into my new office, and working with Glenn on plans for the upcoming school year. In addition to my Wildwood hat, I am also the Assistant Principal at Sunrise Elementary. I'll be at Sunrise every morning and at Wildwood every afternoon.

I am the proud mom of Autumn, 15 and Noah, 11. They are at PHS and Maplewood this year. I spend lots of time in the evenings running the "sports taxi". I also find great pleasure in embarrassing my children, riding around downtown Puyallup with my bike-basket full of goodies from the farmer's market.

As many of you know, I spent two weeks in June in the hospital with a collapsed lung. I've had to put aside my ambitions to run a half-marathon for the time being, but I'll be back at it soon.

If you need anything or would like to talk, catch me in the afternoons or zip me an email. Email contact works great because I can respond quickly no matter where I am.

GLAD Open Lab

On Thursday August 26 from 12:30-4:30 pm in the Burgundy Room at PSS, we will be holding open lab time for previously trained GLAD teachers to come down and work on "GLAD"ing their units of study. Office supplies, laminator, markers, magazines, chart paper, etc will all be available for staff to use during this time. We also anticipate having one or more of our GLAD Tier II staff present to offer suggestions and assistance to staff. This time will be at the discretion of the GLAD teachers who wish to utilize this opportunity.

New Gradebook

PSD will have an elementary standards based Gradebook available in TAC beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. We will conduct a Field Test of the Gradebook during this first year, and are asking up to 100 elementary teachers to volunteer to use the Gradebook and provide periodic feedback via online surveys. At the conclusion of the 2010-2011 school year, participants will receive $50.

Read on to learn about some of the benefits to the Gradebook, what’s required of Field Testers, and how to volunteer.

Benefits of the new elementary Gradebook:

1) The Gradebook uses the same ‘competencies’ that appear on the Elementary Report Card. Assignments can be attached to the exact element you are grading.

2) You can enter a Report Card grade at any time during the trimester before the ‘window’ officially opens.

3) The Gradebook can be used to enter all the report card grades for your students. When the ‘window’ opens you can load all the grades at one time, or for individual subjects at a time.

4) Because the Gradebook is part of TAC, it’s backed up nightly and any scores you enter are immediately saved.

5) It can be accessed from your teacher laptop from any location that has an internet connection.

What is required of Field Testers?

1) Attendance at a 3-hour Gradebook training & practice session on August 17, 18, or 19 at ITC. Clock hours will be awarded!

2) Commitment to using the Gradebook throughout the 2010-2011 school year.

3) Participation in approximately three online surveys.

How to volunteer for the Field Test:

Important: You must register for a training class by end of day on Wednesday, June 9^th. Class size is limited, and once a class is full it will no longer accept registrations.

Step 1 – Go to: http://schools.puyallup.k12.wa.us/fieldtest/

Step 2 – Click on ‘Schedule’ for the date & time you would like to attend training.

This will open a GroupWise email to TAC-Elementary with the training date/time in the Subject Line.

Step 3 – In the body of the email, enter your building and the grade you teach. Leave the Subject Line as is.

Step 4 – Click Send

You will receive a confirmation email on or before Monday, June 14^th.

If you don’t want to participate in the Field Test:

The new Gradebook will still be available for you to use in TAC if you wish.
